Chelsea - A look at the players.
They are off to China. A nice phrase to write and people estimate that Chelsea have some 60 million supporters in the countries visited on this far eastern tour. A figure that seem strange to write, which some of them will show up here. But considering the number of Indian-Pakistan friends we have here at the site, it might be indicative.Wednesday they play the first game on the tour. The entire squad will be there with the exception of Didier Drogba, whose knee problem keeps him at Cobham and probably has made him unsellable for his hard-working agent. In a way better news for Chelsea, though the news that he still have knee problems can hardly be said being good news. Even the newly-wed Michael Ballack that had Elton John sing him a specially written song at the reception will join.I have taken myself the liberty of taking my very own evalaution of our squad, just to help Big Felipe. No apparent order. If he should care. It might be an idea for you too to send in your evaluation for Merlin to publish.Could be absent when the season start (not saying I want any of the them to be).
Henrique Hilario. Has been a very good third choice goalkeeper and has played more than anyone wished. Still, it is time to give the spot to Rhys Taylor from the youths.
Paulo Ferreira. Mrs Merlin will hate me for ever, but loyal and very nice Paulo is of all in the defence the most surplus in my eyes, despite being an international for Portugal as LB.
Juliano Belletti. Great shot, great corners, good crosses. Defensively a bit unstable, can not match José Bosingwa`s speed or offensive qualities.
Shaun Wright-Phillips. Most of us do recognise that the dimunitive winger has reached his potential at Chelsea. Personally I love his fighting spirit and heart, but I think he has reached as far as he can, not the least considering that he was better last season when played out of position than in position.
Frank Lampard. Chelsea legend, that might try his hand another place or press himself to the agent`s dream, a megahuge contract. Be a man Frank, do what you want - just do it. Sign or try a dream to play abroad.
Claudio Pizarro. Good looking horse owner. Left with Santa Cruz, and was very much overshadowed by the Blackburn striker. One of the main surplus players as I see it.
Nicolas Anelka. The only one that looked terrified of playing in the CL-final. Has a lot of support, but not mine. His supporters claim he has been played out of position, I claim that one still has to show at least determination and will.
Andrij Shevchenko. The best in the world twice. Mainly lost here. But he has always worked hard and tried when he has gotten his chances, more under JM than under Average. Also always played out of position and still managed to score a decent number of goals.
Tal Ben Haim. The most enigmatic transfer we ever done. I still can not for my life understand what and why JM wanted him in the squad. A lumbering Huth-copy but without Robert`s great shot and aerial prowess.
Khalid Boulahrouz. Had a very good Euro, but failed at Sevilla on loan. A hero when he reduced Ronaldinho to dinho at the Bridge, but too often missed his timing and his pace is simply not enough for the PL.
Steve Sidwell. Has already left for a club much better suited for him.
Claude Makelele. Might leave for a final stint in a league he has not played for most of his career. Want him to stay, but will not object if he wants to leave.
Florent Malouda. I admired him in France. Never came close in England. He has it in him, will he get it out under Big Fil? Looks a bit complacent which hurts his rep.
Carlo Cudicini. We love him to death, but he deserves to be first choice and if he get it and wants to leave, same as Makelele.
Alcides. Don`think he will get a work-permit, hence probably off to PSV again.
Comment. Any of these could leave, I hope most of them stay but it necessary some of them try their luck elsewhere as the squad has to be decimated. Most of them can be replaced, except Frank and Claude maybe. Some might turn around their career again under Scolari, main hope is Sheva. In the process.
Future Talents Of Chelsea Team
John Obi Mikel Has emerged as the Maka2, but honestly that is not his best position. He is more of a two-way player.Branislav Ivanovic. We know nothing yet. Except that Ranieri really wanted him to go to Juve.
Alex. I have total faith. Had he had more speed he would already be world class.
Scott Sinclair. If he can not keep his spot in the England U-19, maybe he already have peaked? Another Jon Harley? Please prove me wrong.
Franco Di Santo. Expect him to start some games and come off the bench a couple of more this season. Exciting big player that can be a good target player and aerial player.
Salomon Kalou. I like him a lot. He has come along nicely, not in great leaps but steadily. Our best assist player last season. Works hard and has imagination. Needs a bit more muscle I think.
Untouchables
(Frank Lampard. If he wants to.)
Petr Cech. Still one of the very best 3 in the world. Which is remarkable after what Hunt did to him. Has to still be regarded as healing.
Joe Cole. Simply because we all love you. Most Chelsea fan of the players.
Ricardo Carvalho. I do not regard him as much as most here. But he is the best attacking defender centrally. Has great pace and fits very well with both JT and Alex. Very adaptable.
Ashley Cole. Best English LB and on his way back to become one of the best overall.Wayne Bridge. Almost as good, with better crosses. Not as pacey as Cole.
Michael Essien. The most versatile player in the world. A superstar already and should have been appointed Player of the Year in Africa.
Michael Ballack. Better day for day as he learned how to assert himself in the team.
John Terry. Well, enough said.
Didier Drogba. Best target player in the world. His knee worries me, a tricky injury at his age.
Not to be judged
José Bosingwa and Deco. They are new additions and should be great compliments to the team, each bringing great talent and skill to the squad.
