Ivory Coast claim that Didier Drogba did not win the African Footballer of the Year award because the striker failed to attend Friday's acceptance ceremony. The Confederation of African Football (CAF) had voted to name the Chelsea forward Africa's player of the year for 2007, according to an Ivory Coast spokesman.
However, Drogba is currently on Africa Cup of Nations duty with Ivory Coast, who have reached the semi-finals of the competition in Ghana. Drogba therefore opted not to travel to Friday's ceremony in Lome and Ivory Coast are claiming that is why Mali striker Frederic Kanoute was handed the award instead. "CAF has brought itself into disrepute," said Ivory Coast spokesman Jean-Claude Djacus.
"They called Didier on the eve of the ceremony to tell him they would give the award to Kanoute if he did not come.
